Classes may be arranged anytime during the year for groups of 5-8 persons with at least 6 weeks notice by contacting the Health Nurse. American Heart Association CPR classes and American Red Cross First Aid and Safety
curriculum and books are used. Course requires active participation, successful ability to pass written exam and perform various skills. Cost of class comprises of class materials, supplies, and course completion card.

Courses applicable

There are different courses that are available to suit your needs. Generally speaking Adult CPR classes take about 4-5 hours, Infant and Child CPR about 5-6 hours, First Aid Class about 4 hours. This course is the minimum requirement for OA Leaders. HEART (Health Education and Rescue Training) teaches the American Safety & Health Institute Wilderness First Aid Course, an intensive course that covers patient examination and evaluation, body systems and anatomy, wound care, splinting, environmental emergencies, and backcountry medicine. Hands-on simulations provide first-hand training in treating patients. This is an excellent course taught by experienced Wilderness First Responders and Emergency Medical Technicians and is highly recommended to all wilderness travelers.

Conclusion

One out of every two people in the United States can expect to die from a heart attack or a related disease of the blood vessels. Most people who die from a heart attack die before they get to a hospital. Some people survive a heart attack because someone trained in CPR was able to quickly respond and render immediate aid. It's therefore important for the University to have as many employees trained in CPR as possible. It is the purpose and goal of this program to have a well trained group of employees who are scattered throughout the campus to render aid when necessary. The American Red Cross has a program whereby individual training centers can be set up to conduct CPR training classes as long as certain criteria are met. The University has qualified under these guidelines and is now an authorized Training Center.
