addressed people of different backgrounds and were clearly legible at a distance. The 'red cross' is not a public domain symbol for first aid which is contrary to popular belief. The symbol of first aid was designed due to this effort and green cross on white background is used as a First Aid symbol. This is recommended by International Standards Organization. This differs from the St. Lazarus Cross in which the arm ends of the green cross are taken to borders and not shortened like first aid green cross.

History of Green Cross

Green colour is very important for having symbol in its first place. Around two hundred years ago, Wilhelm Sattler produced a emerald pigment for artists. It was very popular for its warm hue, and the copper arsenite which gave the paint a level of permanence. But the poison which it carried killed some artists unfortunately. Since then copper aceto-arsenite was more used as a rat poison by sweepers. After some years, ironically though, this green cross, along with yellow cross and blue cross, was used to identify the contents of a deadly artillery gas shell during the periods of First World War.

Conclusion

The green crosses are also known as Vert Crosses. Of course this term 'vert' means fresh emerald green colour. It has a bright tincture symbolizing vitality like a young plant .the pale green is contrasted with this. The pale green is emblematic of death and associated with bad luck by some people. Although such colors can portray ecologically friendly image, but for above mentioned reasons, it is not used in cars or vehicles. Green colour is always used in institutions like prisons and famously in hospitals as it has a soothing effect. This brings us back to the colour and symbol chosen for first aid.
